Changes in children’s BMI between 2006/07 and 2011/12

This report presents analysis of data from the first six years of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) and describes the changes that have taken place across survey years in the body mass index (BMI) of children aged 4–5 and 10–11 years attending state maintained schools in England.

Prevalence of obesity and mean BMI (adjusted for age) have been used to summarise the BMI of the child population by school year and sex. Analysis has also been conducted to examine changes by level of socioeconomic deprivation, by ethnic group, and across the BMI distribution. This report provides an update on the analysis presented by the National Obesity Observatory (NOO) in 2012.

Data tables: Electoral Ward and MSOA NCMP child obesity prevalence

These spreadsheets contain NCMP obesity prevalence data for Reception (age 4-5 years) and Year 6 (age 10-11 years) children by 2011 Electoral Ward and 2001 Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) of residence with LA, GOR and England data for comparison.

Data table: Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) child prevalence data by BMI category

This spreadsheet contains prevalence by BMI category (underweight, healthy weight, overweight, obesity) for Reception and Year 6 children by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) of residence using 2008/09 to 2010/11 NCMP data.

CCG boundaries are still evolving geographies and so these data are currently provisional. These data will be updated in 2014 with updated geographies and new 2011/12 NCMP data.

Changes in children’s BMI between 2006/07 and 2010/11

This report presents analysis of data from the first five years of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) and describes the changes that have taken place across survey years in the body mass index (BMI) of children aged 4–5 and 10–11 years attending state maintained schools in England.

Prevalence of obesity and mean BMI (adjusted for age) have been used to summarise the BMI of the child population by school year and sex. Analysis has also been conducted to examine changes across the BMI distribution, by level of socioeconomic deprivation, and by ethnic group.

This report provides an update on the analysis presented by the National Obesity Observatory (NOO) in 2011.

National Child Measurement Programme: Changes in children’s body mass index between 2006/07 and 2009/10

This report presents analysis of the first four years of National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) data, and highlights any statistically significant differences that can be detected across survey years in the body mass index (BMI) of English children aged 4–5 and 10–11 years.

It provides an update on the analysis presented in 2010. Prevalence of obesity and mean BMI (adjusted for age) have been used to summarise the BMI of the child population by school year and sex. Analysis has also been conducted to examine change across the BMI distribution, by level of socioeconomic deprivation, and by ethnic group.

Child obesity statistics for PCT Clusters

A set of maps and charts illustrating the variation in child obesity and healthy weight across the new Primary Care Trust (PCT) clusters in England. It also illustrates the relationship between obesity prevalence and level of socicoeconomic deprivation, and describes the level of participation in the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for all PCT clusters.

NCMP analysis using the ONS Area Classification

This report explores child obesity prevalence (using National Child Measurement Programme data) by geographic population sub-groups that are based on socio-demographic characteristics (Office for National Statistics Area Classification). The analysis highlights health inequalities that exist between different population groups and identifies the likely level of obesity within local neighbourhoods and populations.

Variation in children’s BMI by month of measurement

This paper analyses the 2008/09 NCMP dataset to investigate whether any variation in obesity prevalence and BMI can be detected between measurements taken in different months.

National Child Measurement Programme: Changes in children’s body mass index between 2006/07 and 2008/09

This report presents analysis of the first three years of National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) data, and highlights any statistically significant differences that can be detected across survey years in the BMI of English children aged 4 to 5 and 10 to 11 years.

The NCMP has now provided three years of good quality data. The size of the dataset, which includes approximately one million records in each of the last two years, means that some significant differences can be detected even over this short timescale.

Prevalence of obesity and mean BMI (adjusted for age) have been used to summarise the BMI of the child population by school year and sex. Analysis has also been conducted to examine change across the BMI distribution, by level of socioeconomic deprivation, and by ethnic group.

National Child Measurement Programme: Detailed Analysis of the 2007/08 Dataset

This report presents detailed secondary analyses to further our understanding of the epidemiology of child height, weight and body mass index (BMI) across England. It attempts to explain some of the findings presented in the NHS Information Centre for health and social care 2007/08 NCMP report.

The report provides analysis of PCT participation levels and investigates data quality issues in the collection of the 2007/08 NCMP dataset. Data on prevalence of underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obesity are analysed, comparing the 2007/08 data to the 2006/07, and the 1990 baseline.

Analyses by deprivation and ethnic group are also included. The report further examines how the distribution of BMI differs by age and sex of the child sample population, and investigates changes since the 1990 baseline. It looks at the association between obesity prevalence and characteristics of the individual children and the PCTs in which they were measured using regression analysis.

National Child Measurement Programme: Detailed Analysis of the 2006/07 National Dataset

This report, entitled National Child Measurement Programme: Detailed Analysis of the 2006/07 National Dataset, highlights the usefulness of the NCMP for advancing our understanding of underweight, overweight and obesity in children. The report looks at the effects of socio-demographic and other factors on the reported prevalence of childhood obesity. It also identifies areas where improvements can be made, and where further analysis and investigation are required.

NOO presented a poster titled Health inequalities and childhood obesity: are ethnicity and the urban environment determinants of obesity or is deprivation a confounding factor for both? at the 17th European Congress on Obesity in Amsterdam in May 2009.

The wider literature on obesity and its determinants describes a strong relationship between obesity prevalence and deprivation, areas of high deprivation in England have the highest prevalence of obesity. The poster uses NCMP data to investigate whether deprivation is a confounding factor for both urban environment and ethnicity in their association with the likelihood of being classified as obese.
