The National Obesity Observatory e-atlases

New child LA and PCT e-atlases now include 2011 NCMP data
A detailed help guide is available within the e-atlases. A quick help guide can be downloaded here.
The National Obesity Observatory e-atlases are interactive mapping tools for the analysis of data on the prevalence of obesity and its determinants at Local Authority (LA), Primary Care Trust (PCT), and Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level in England.
The child e-atlases enable users to view and compare data at PCT, LA, and MSOA level, in both single and dual map format. In the PCT and LA child e-atlas prevalence data from the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) are presented using two sets of body mass index (BMI) classifications from the British 1990 child growth reference (UK90). ‘BMI classification 85th/ 95th centiles’ refers to the population monitoring cut-offs, as used in the figures published by the NHS Information Centre. ‘BMI classification 91st/ 98th centiles’ refers to clinical cut-offs. These thresholds are used in a clinical setting (e.g. by GPs) to classify children as overweight or obese and are also used for feeding back NCMP results to parents.
The dual map e-atlas enables users to compare indicators including prevalence of child obesity using data from the NCMP with, for example, local area deprivation scores and NCMP participation rate.
The adult e-atlases allow examination of data on prevalence of obesity as well as the determinants of obesity and associated diseases at LA level.
A metadata and guidance document is available for each indicator providing information on the data source and an explanation of any limitations that should be considered when undertaking analysis.
Users can use images from these e-atlases in reports or presentations. Either do a print screen and crop the resulting image to view what is needed, or right click anywhere on the e-atlas and select the ‘Export’ option. Please note that only the print screen option works for the maps in the MSOA e-atlas.
